Des Moines, ia, United States

I am the Shop Supervisor of the Des Moines Lapidary Society. Besides cutting my own stones, I teach beginners how to use the equipment to cut and polish stones. I help them with what to look for when choosing rocks for cutting, and stones for polishing. I also teach silver smithing so that they can put their stones into a setting.

Skills and Techniques

I have use of the equipment in the Des Moines Lapidary Society to take the stones from large chunks of rock, cut the slab, then cut out the shapes of the semi-precious stones and then file (Grind) the stones, polish them and determine if I see a jewelry piece or put them aside for later. Once I determine what type of jewelry the stones will make, I turn to the silver smithing to finish the piece.

Get to Know

I am adept at taking a raw stone, cutting it into blanks, then cutting the stone shapes. The grinding and polishing of the stones may take several more weeks, and getting it set into jewelry make take many more months. I cut and set all types of semi-precious stones, but my favorite to work with is Jasper.
