Hegemon - Mixed Media on Wood
The “Hegemon” represents the hegemonic figure through a series of symbolisms. By studying hegemonic figures in the art of 14th and 15th centuries I observed that they were very close to the depiction of an hagiography. The hegemonic figures were surrounded by symbols of authority and power and they commonly had a style of stringency, reminding with this way their power and conrol. Talking about chronic periods in which arts were very clearly privilege and luxury, the mode of hegemon depictions were frequently represented with a pompous manner. Many times in late centuries they used also various precious materials such as gold.
By using the triangle as the highest phallic symbol of power and authority, in order to symbolise the hegemon, I created a piece of art by mating various means existing during so called by me “hegemonic period of art”. The triangle maden using ash, symbolising the the pointless and vanity of authority, the gold broken and disorderly located in places where it does not highlights the central theme (phallic symbol) but on the contrary it creates a sense of anarchy and futility. The “hegemon” (as well as the largest part of the work) it is made with a black color highlighting in this way the stringency and mysticism of the era which I comment. Right and left at the top of “hegemon” there are the divine symbols of creation and power, the letters Α and Ω badly written with the use of the typography of that age, showing in an ironic mode the power of the human ruler as coming from God.
