Sterling silver handmade filigree greyhound profile pendant "Zephyr"
Filigree is a delicate-looking type of jewelry made of intricately bent and twisted pieces of wire, soldered together. Many ethnic varieties of filigree have evolved in different countries around the world, including Norway, Russia, Italy, Israel, China, and India. And now there's Feathered Gems' all-American filigree to add to that list!
"Zephyr" is one of Feathered Gems' newest designs. Made entirely out of sterling silver wire, she's approximately 1.5 inches (38mm) wide and 2 inches (50mm) tall. Zephyr's ear is 3-dimensional, standing out from the head about 1/8 inch (3mm). I have worn this piece myself, and the ear does not catch on anything. She comes with a small certificate containing details about the piece. She hangs from a 20 inch long sterling silver wheat link chain that is slinky, strong, and comfortable to wear.
Filigree jewelry is created by starting with thicker 18 gauge square wire which is bent and formed to create an outline and inner design boundaries. The outline is soldered together every place the wires touch, to form a frame for the filigree. Then the frame is filled with short lengths of very fine 26 gauge twisted and flattened wire. The twisted wires are formed into swirls, hearts and other shapes. Each shaped piece of wire must be fitted exactly into the design to ensure that there are no gaps that might create loose wire ends which would weaken the piece. The flattened edges of the many twists in the filler wires twinkle and glitter, drawing the eye as the pendant moves.
Each place the filigree wires touch against each other or against the frame must be soldered. There are many different solder techniques used to create traditional ethnic styles of filigree. My filigree style is anything but traditional. The process is very Zen-like, requiring total concentration while at the same time being quite relaxing. I think it is best described as "doodling done with wire and fire". Every place the wires touch in my filigree is individually soldered, creating a very strong but lightweight piece of jewelry. Every filigree piece I create will be unique; The outer shapes may be similar, but no two will ever have exactly the same filler designs.
The last photo in the set of pictures shows some of Zephyr's "littermates" who were made at the same time. Two of them have already found new homes, and are marked as "sold". Feel free to contact me if you'd like to order a custom piece based on one of the shapes in that photo.
