Antique Enamel Stamp Box with hinged lid and cobalt and yellow flow......
I love these old chinese stamp boxes!. This one measures 1 1/2" x 1 1/4" x 1 1/2" and is in beautifully decorated with yellow and pink flowers and a cobalt background.
The United States followed with its first stamp in 1847. In those ancient days, sending a letter was something special, and stamps were expensive, so special boxes and cases were created to hold them. The first were made of wood or leather, but as time went on they were made of brass, ivory, silver, even gold, and adorned with carving, inlaying, engraving, and enamel. In late Victorian and Edwardian times, no lady's or gentleman's desk was complete without a box to hold stamps.
It is marked China on the bottom and probably dates in the 1920-1930's. One tiny piece of the hinge cover is missing ( You can't tell unless you really look) and it does not hinder how well it opens or closes.
