BLUE TOPAZ Vintage Sky Blue Faceted Oval gemstone 21.74 cts fgs125

A stunning 21.74 carat vintage blue topaz gemstone that we had custom cut for us from rough acquired in Sri Lanka in the late 1970s. It measures 20x15x11 mm - perfectly calibrated for easy setting. The stone is flawless to the unaided eye ("eye-clean") and is super-brilliant, with cutting far superior to what you will find these days in the commercial marketplace.

Gemstone nomenclature can sometimes be confusing, but confusion seems to be the general rule when it comes to topaz, the birthstone for November. Topaz is a colorless mineral composed of hydrous aluminum silicate. It forms wonderful and often perfect crystals, sometimes of gigantic size (more than 100 kilograms). Traces of impurities produce various hues, including dark brown (from Russia), light yellowish brown (Mexico and Utah), green, blue, pink, red, and a huge palette of yellows and oranges. Of these, ONLY the yellow and orange varieties from Ouro Preto, Brazil are considered "precious topaz". If this material contains a trace of chromium, a pink or reddish coloration is produced that can be very intense - this material is given the unique appellation "Imperial topaz".

Gemstone dealers have, for many years, added the word "topaz" to much more common and less expensive stones, intending to thereby give these gems enhanced "status". The best example is "smoky topaz" (which is actually 'smoky' quartz), or "citrine topaz" (orange quartz). This is basically a false or misleading trade practice, but it has become so pervasive in the gemstone marketplace that its consequences are largely ignored.

Topaz is extremely hard - number 8 on the Mohs hardness scale - versus 7 for quartz and 9 for ruby and sapphire. Topaz has perfect cleavage so care must be taken when it is worn in rings, but the stone seems to hold up well in jewelry. Red and pink are the most prized and expensive topaz colors, with large fine stones reaching several thousand dollars per carat at wholesale. The more familiar yellow and orange variety known as "precious" topaz varies in price with hue and depth of color, the darkest pure oranges being the most valuable.

Natural blue topaz exists and is extremely rare and costly. In the 1970s a process was discovered for turning colorless ("white") topaz blue with a combination of irradiation and heat. The first stones produced in this way were bombarded with electrons in a cyclotron, producing a "sky" blue color. More energetic radiation turns colorless topaz brown, and heating changes this to blue, in a variety of shades that have been given such fancy names as "London Blue", "Swiss Blue", "Superblue", etc.

Blue topaz has become one of the most popular gemstones in the jewelry trade.

The price is for this one faceted gemstone, and we guarantee it to be natural vintage topaz that has been treated to produce the blue color. The shipping cost includes insurance.

One of the photographs shows one of the several books that Joel has written. Love my beads! The coloring in the epidote was not as intense as illustrated, but it is certainly a good example of the mineral. The colors in the unakite beads are wonderful. The quality of the carving I would rate as good to excellent.

When I thought that I had ordered two of these and then checked out I had to order another set. The seller was very kind and combined my two orders and refunded my shipping.
