How is a pearl graded?
• AAA: virtually flawless pearl. Surface has a very high luster, and 95% of the surface will be free from any type of defect.
• AA+: very high luster, and at least 90% of the surface will be free from any type of defect.
• AA: the surface will have a very high luster, and at least 75% of the surface will be free from any type of defect.
• A: the lowest jewelry-graded pearl, with low surface luster and/or more than 25% of the surface showing defects. (We do not offer this grade for sale.)
• Freshwater pearls have an allowable size variance of a full millimeter per strand. A strand of 8mm freshwater
pearls may be measured between 7 and 8-millimeters in size.

How can I tell the quality of a pearl?
• HIGH LUSTER: Pearl surface reflects light and shows mirror-like reflections.
• SHAPE: is one of the principal determining factors in a pearl's value after luster. With all other factors being equal, the general rule is that the rounder the pearl, the more valuable it is.
• COLOR: Naturally occurring pearl colors include traditional white as well as fancy silver, ivory/cream, pink, lavender/lilac, silver and gold hues.
• SURFACE: The term "blemishes" refers to any visible bumps, marks, imperfections or small indentations on the pearl's surface. These blemishes give each pearl a unique "fingerprint" of identifying factors.
• SIZE: The most common size for pearls ranges from 6 to 7.5-millimeters in diameter.

What is Mother of Pearl?
Mother-of-pearl is made from the inner lining of different mollusk shells, pearl oysters, freshwater pearl mussels, and abalone. Mother-of-pearl is a popular jewelry element because of its iridescent appearance and affordable price.

What is the difference between natural and cultured pearls?
The birth of a natural pearl is a miraculous event! Natural pearls occur without any human intervention and are very rare. Most have been harvested. An irritant, accidentally, lodges itself inside a mollusk's soft inner body. To ease this irritant, the mollusk secretes a smooth substance (called 'nacre') around the irritant to protect itself and a pearl is born. Cultured pearls are grown by pearl farms under, tightly, controlled conditions. Highly skilled technicians, surgically and safely, implant a starter piece into the mollusk to initiate the nacre secreting process, and a beautiful pearl is formed. Cultured and natural pearls share the same properties. Pearls are like fingerprints and snowflakes. No two are alike!

What are Swarovski pearls?
Swarovski Crystal Pearls, made by Swarovski of Austria, are a glass pearl simulant made with a leaded-crystal core and a coating that gives them a luster similar to natural pearls.

What is the difference between freshwater and saltwater cultured pearls?
Freshwater pearls are grown in ponds, rivers, and lakes. A mussel can produce up to 50 freshwater pearls at one time. Once a pearl starter is in place, it takes 4 to 6 years to fully develop the pearls. Saltwater pearls are grown in oceans and seas around Japan and China. It takes 10 to 18 months for just one oyster pearl to develop large enough for harvest. These are known as Akoya pearls. Additionally, it is very difficult to maintain a perfect spherical shape while the pearl develops. This is why very large near-round pearls are extremely rare and valuable.

Pearl sizes vary:
o Freshwater pearls typically range 3 to 12-millimeters
o South Sea/Tahitian Pearls range 8 to 18-millimeters/Akoya pearls range 2 to 9.5-millimeters

How can I tell if a pearl is genuine or authentic?
One of the basic tests to determine a pearl's authenticity is the 'tooth test'. Gently, rub the pearl against the front of your tooth — not against the edge which can scratch the pearl. If natural or cultured, rather than simulated, the pearl should feel gritty or grainy.

How should I care for my cultured freshwater pearls?
When getting dressed, cultured pearls should be the last item put on and the first item taken off. Makeup, hairspray, perfume, and other chemicals are very harmful to cultured pearls. They can be gently washed in a mild soap or wiped with a damp cloth to remove daily build up and dirt. They should also be separated from other jewelry to avoid nicks and scratches.
