Puffer fish glass earrings on sterling silver wire
These earrings are creating by merging two different techniques; metalsmithing and lampwork glass bead making.
They both require a torch (two different ones) and allow me to use sterling silver wire and glass rods to make something very different from what I start out with.
This bead was designed by Diane Woodall and posted in Soda Limes Times, an e-magazine for lampworking.
The eyes are murrini which is a process by which a pattern is made in glass and after heating, it is stretched out to make the pattern miniature. Then the piece of glass is cut into individual pieces. This is the same technique that is used to make the tiny flowers that are in glass paperweights.
How these earrings are made:
To make the glass bead, I heat the glass rod with a torch until it is molten and the consistency of thick honey. Then it is wrapped around a steel mandrel and shaped into a round ball. The eyes and mouth are added next and then the glass for the fins is added. The dots are added and the last step is to heat the fins and then squeeze them with a tweezers to give them their shape and pattern. The bead then goes into the kiln to be annealed. Annealing removes internal stress that builds up in the glass during creation.
The bead is on sterling silver wire. The wire is heated to make a molten ball on either end and after that, it is tumbled to work harden it. After this, the bead is first put on the wire, then a 5 mm sterling silver bead and one end is forged (hammered) so everything stays on. The other end is hammered to flatten it and then a hole drilled into it for the ear wire.
The ear wire is made of sterling silver wire and is purchased from Rio Grande.
