VINTAGE CHINESE UNAKITE BEAD Coral Jade FOCAL 29mm pkg 1 1980 CB286
Vintage hand carved unakite stone focal bead in a a large oval carved melon pattern.
The quality of this carved unakite beads is superb with great luster and the characteristic colors of jade green and coral pink. Unakite beads are very rare to find in such large sizes these days and you certainly won't find it cut in this unusual 'oval melon ' shape!
Unakite is a kind of granite that is unique - being composed entirely of feldspar (peach color) and epidote (green). Unakite is a granitic rock consisting of orthoclase feldspar ( peach color) and epidote (green). . Unakite is named after the locality of its discovery which is the Unaka Mountains in the Blue Ridge area of the eastern United States. It's found in Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee. The material was then shipped to Asia where it was cut and superbly polished.
In 1982 we made one of our very first buying trips to Asia when I was beginning to buy stone beads for the designs I sold to the Smithsonian for their museum shops and catalogs. I was always looking for unusually carved beads which helped set my work apart from other designers.
Back in the 1980's the standards of cutting were superb and as we were able to literally hand pick all the beads, we selected only the best.
***If you love these beautifully hand carved stone beads, please check out my item CB-247 which is a wonderful carved oval twist but in a smaller size ( pkg4 ) and CB-22A which is an 11m round carved melon twist ( pkg4 ) - great companion beads to this one large focal!***
Price is for 1 bead which measures approximately 29mmm long ( almost 1/4" !) by 19mm wide and carved in an oval melon -a shape that was so common back in the 1970's -1980's. We guarantee this bead to be vintage. Because this is natural stone, the patterns and amount of coral does vary very slightly from bead to bead.
I sold many of these vintage carved unakite beads through the Smithsonian Institution's museum shop and mail order catalog during the 1980's and they were also featured in trunk shows at Bloomingdales and Saks Fifth Avenue during this same time period.
